THE CHALLENGE FOR COMPANIES IN THE DIGITAL AGE: BALANCING CYBERSECURITY AND SUSTAINABILITY

Heloisa Nogueira and Thamara Belinatti

Over the years, businesses have faced numerous challenges; a recent study titled the "Allianz Risk Barometer," conducted by Allianz Commercial, revealed that cybercrimes—or digital fraud, as it is more commonly known—have become a top concern for Brazilian business leaders, surpassing even climate crises, which also impact corporate development.

Globally, cybercrimes also top the list of major corporate threats. Growing reliance on technology, the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and a succession of successful digital fraud incidents are intensifying concerns among business leaders.

Examples of this include the 2024 software update failure at cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which affected airline and banking systems, highlighting the vulnerability of organizations.

Let us not forget the famous case of the Hong Kong multinational that fell victim to a scam involving "deepfake" technology to divert approximately US$ 25 million—an incident that laid bare the sophistication of the scams companies face today.

The rapid digitalization of business requires companies to continuously invest in technological infrastructure and information security; implementing rigorous data protection policies, combined with the use of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain, can strengthen systems against cyberattacks.

However, this technological preparation and investment must be planned carefully to ensure that the solutions adopted are sustainable and help reduce environmental impact—such as by using energy-efficient servers and migrating to renewable energy sources.

At the same time, responsible environmental practices should be integrated into corporate strategic planning, allowing innovation to go hand in hand with environmental preservation.

Companies that invest in energy efficiency, sustainable logistics, and carbon footprint reduction not only contribute to a more balanced future but also strengthen their market image and earn the trust of investors and consumers who are increasingly demanding regarding social and environmental responsibility.

Thus, the organization and structuring of a company today go far beyond what was envisioned 40 years ago and require more careful planning than ever. Balancing modernity and sustainability is no longer an option but a necessity for business longevity. Companies that successfully balance innovation, protection, and environmental responsibility will be better prepared to face the challenges of the modern world, ensuring resilience and competitiveness.
